Sberbank Prepares to Accept Ether, USDT as Loan Collateral in Russia
Sberbank, one of Russia's largest financial institutions, is preparing to accept Ether and USDT as loan collateral alongside Bitcoin. This move comes after Russia developed new cryptocurrency rules and is considering how digital assets can be incorporated into traditional banking.
The inclusion of Ether and USDT would give borrowers access to a broader range of digital assets for securing loans from Sberbank, while still being dependent on the central bank's approval for public trading. The central bank must clear these assets for public trading under Russia's new crypto rules before Sberbank can proceed with the proposed expansion.
The use of digital assets as collateral is an extension of traditional banking practices, where property and securities are used to secure loans. However, financial institutions face a challenge in accounting for the differences between various types of digital assets, such as Bitcoin's market structure and price behavior compared to Ether and USDT.
