SBI Expands Southeast Asia Footprint with $270 Million Ajaib Acquisition
Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings is set to acquire a 20% stake in Indonesian online brokerage firm Ajaib Group for $270 million by the end of this month. This move aims to expand its Japanese Yen Stablecoin, JPYSC ($0.01 · Live), into Southeast Asia and leverage blockchain technology to build cross-border settlement infrastructure.
Ajaib provides SBI with a foothold in the Indonesian market, which is one of the largest retail investment markets in ASEAN, boasting over 20 million retail investors and an estimated $375 billion consumer retail market. Ajaib operates online brokerage, foreign exchange margin trading, cryptocurrency, and asset management services.
The $270 million deal marks Indonesia's largest tech funding deal in years, according to the source. SBI Group President and CEO Yoshitaka Kitao stated that 'in the tokenization era, the importance of global digital asset infrastructure is becoming increasingly prominent.' This investment is part of SBI's Southeast Asia expansion plans, following its earlier acquisition of Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinhako for approximately $100 million.
