SBI Invests Big in Indonesia's Ajaib to Boost Yen Stablecoin
SBI Holdings, a major Japanese financial firm, has made a significant investment in Ajaib Group, a leading Indonesian online brokerage. The deal sees SBI acquire a 20% stake in Ajaib for $270 million, as part of its push to expand its yen-denominated stablecoin, JPYSC, across Southeast Asia.
Ajaib's presence in Indonesia gives SBI a foothold in the country's consumer-retail market, worth an estimated $375 billion. The firm operates online brokerage services, foreign-exchange margin trading, cryptocurrencies, and asset management in Indonesia, making it a key player in the region.
SBI's chairman and president, Yoshitaka Kitao, stated that 'in this era of tokenization, the importance of global infrastructure for digital assets is greater than ever.' The investment follows SBI's acquisition of Coinhako Group, a Singapore-based crypto exchange, and its separate investment in DigiFT, a Singaporean digital securities trading platform.
