Schumer Demands Crypto Industry Distance Itself from Trump to Pass Regulation Bill

Share

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged the crypto industry to distance itself from President Donald Trump in order to pass a crypto market structure bill with strong ethics restrictions. This comes after the collapse of the Clarity Act, which Schumer had been pushing for. The bill would have regulated the crypto market and included guardrails to prevent Trump from using his presidential authority to make money from crypto.

Schumer stated that Democrats could not support a bill without these ethics restrictions. He specifically mentioned that people do not want to see Trump using his authority to make money from crypto. Schumer also mentioned that the crypto industry spent eight-figure amounts on campaign ads against former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), which followed the demise of the Clarity Act.

Schumer's comments suggest that the crypto industry's campaign spending against Brown may have been a response to the Clarity Act's demise. However, Schumer emphasized that the industry's failure to distance itself from Trump was a major obstacle to passing the bill.
