Schwab Puts Price Tag on Bitcoin's Inflation-Hedge Narrative

Charles Schwab has quantified the potential impact of a US Senate bill on Bitcoin's price, concluding that it would need to reach approximately $154,000 to match the returns offered by 30-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS).

The brokerage giant modeled Bitcoin's price sensitivity to a $5 billion market tied to the Senate bill, finding that investors would need to lock in a real return of just under 3% for three decades to hold equivalent risk-adjusted value compared to TIPS.

TIPS are Treasury bonds that adjust their principal based on inflation, and the 30-year variety currently yields 2.98%. Schwab's model essentially asks: at what price does holding Bitcoin deliver equivalent risk-adjusted value compared to parking money in TIPS?

The $5 billion figure attached to the Senate bill adds another layer of complexity. While the specific legislation hasn't been publicly identified, it represents either projected capital inflows or the estimated economic impact of the regulatory changes under consideration.

Regulatory clarity has historically been a strong catalyst for institutional crypto adoption, and Schwab's quantification of the price impact suggests the firm is actively modeling regulatory scenarios. However, there's also a risk that the legislative landscape shifts, making it difficult to position around the thesis with precision.

The ambiguity around which specific bill Schwab is modeling makes it challenging for traders to anticipate the outcome, and TIPS yields are not static. If yields climb, the Bitcoin price target needed to match those returns would rise accordingly.
