Schwab Sets Sights on Crypto Spot Trading with Bitcoin and Ethereum Launch
Financial giant Charles Schwab is on the verge of entering the cryptocurrency market through spot trading. The company, which oversees more than $12 trillion in client assets, plans to offer direct access to Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) in the coming months.
The move marks a shift from Schwab's previous indirect exposure to digital assets, offered through exchange-traded products and equities tied to the sector. The company has confirmed that the rollout remains on schedule for the first half of 2026, with an initial focus on the two largest cryptocurrencies by market value.
The offering will begin with a phased release, starting with a smaller group of U.S.-based clients before expanding more broadly. Early access will be limited to certain jurisdictions, excluding New York and Louisiana, according to details provided through the firm’s signup process.
While major digital assets have experienced notable declines from previous highs, Schwab's entry into spot trading signals continued institutional momentum in the sector. The company has indicated interest in stablecoins as a key component of future blockchain-based financial infrastructure, particularly for payments and settlement.
