Schwab Touts NLP as Core of Crypto ETF Strategy
Schwab Asset Management has rebranded its $232 million crypto-equity ETF, the Schwab Crypto Thematic Natural Language Processing ETF (STCE), without changing its underlying investments. The fund's name change reflects a renewed focus on natural language processing (NLP) in its investment strategy.
Launched in 2022 as the Schwab Crypto Thematic ETF, STCE is an equity ETF that owns shares in companies connected to the crypto ecosystem rather than cryptocurrency or other digital assets directly. The fund's objective and fee remain unchanged at 0.30% annual operating expense ratio.
The NLP method was part of the original launch pitch for STCE. According to the 2022 prospectus, the fund used a proprietary natural-language algorithm to identify, select, and weight companies based on their relevance to crypto-related themes. This process involved searching public data for crypto-related keywords, scoring documents for relevance, and using the results to calculate each company's 'Thematic Beta.'
As of July 27, STCE had $232.1 million in net assets and held positions in 42 companies, including Bitcoin miner Bitdeer Technologies at 6.38%, miner CleanSpark at 5.46%, and Trump Media & Technology Group at 5.43%. The fund's company exposure extends beyond miners, with potential indirect effects from digital assets when portfolio companies use or hold them.
The name change has left investors wondering why Schwab added the NLP wording four years after launch, but the company has not provided a clear explanation.
