Schwartz Takes on Replication: Ripple CTO Challenges Bitcoin Copies

Ripple's Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz weighed in on the debate over whether Bitcoin can be replicated, arguing that copying the code doesn't replicate the network. The discussion began at Binance Blockchain Week between CZ (Changpeng Zhao) and Peter Schiff.

Schiff claimed gold-backed tokens have practical use because they represent ownership of a scarce commodity used across industries. However, CZ countered that physical gold is difficult to divide or verify without specialized tools. He said he once received a gold bar as a gift but couldn't break it or confirm its purity, unlike Bitcoin which can be transferred and verified instantly through the blockchain.

Schwartz joined the discussion with a question challenging the premise: 'And how would the new Bitcoin could be new and exactly the same as the original?' He echoed CZ's argument about verifiability, stating that a replica may copy Bitcoin's code but cannot replicate its network of users, miners, institutions, and real-time validation.

Schwartz's point suggests that the existence of another chain doesn't dilute Bitcoin's legitimacy. This mirrors how counterfeit gold doesn't reduce the value of real gold when proper verification exists. It reinforces CZ's argument that Bitcoin can be easily verified in multiple ways, unlike gold.
