Scotland-based Cryptocurrency Holder Targeted by Organized Crime Group

Share

A Scotland-based cryptocurrency holder was targeted by an organized crime group in two separate attempts to steal over £2 million in digital assets. The first break-in occurred on January 2024, where intruders took a hardware wallet but were unable to access the funds due to lack of knowledge of its PIN or recovery phrase.

The second attempt was scheduled for April 17, 2024, but was thwarted when occupants noticed the individuals and a video doorbell camera captured their actions. Prosecutors stated that the group's intention was to gain control of the victim's computer and direct transfers from the hardware wallet.

Barr allegedly coordinated both attempts, with evidence linking him to the schemes found on his phone during police seizure on June 25, 2024. David Dickson KC, the prosecutor, described Barr as 'a sophisticated cybercriminal' capable of orchestrating complex criminal activity.
