The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have jointly released a regulatory framework for digital assets, classifying Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and Cardano as digital commodities.

This five-category taxonomy clarifies regulatory oversight, resolving years of uncertainty and legal disputes in the crypto industry. Payment stablecoins compliant with the GENIUS Act of 2025 are explicitly excluded from being securities.

The framework allows tokens initially sold as securities to later be considered commodities once issuer obligations are met, providing a clearer path for DeFi projects and token issuers.
