SEC Clears Triple-Leveraged Bitcoin and Ether ETPs for Listing
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cleared six triple-leveraged exchange-traded products (ETPs) for listing, including the first ones on bitcoin and ether. The products are sponsored by Volatility Shares LLC and target three times the daily move of an underlying asset.
The approval is not a trading start, as a registration statement under the US Securities Act of 1933 also has to become effective before the product can be offered publicly. The SEC approved a listing rule on October 2, 2026, but weeks can pass between this and the first trading day.
One key aspect of these ETPs is that they do not hold actual assets, such as bitcoin or ether, but rather futures contracts to track their performance. This means that the products are subject to volatility decay, where the daily reset can lead to unexpected outcomes, especially in a market drifting sideways far below its highs.
For German accounts, these ETPs will not be directly available due to EU regulations on packaged investment products (PRIIPs), which require a key information document for every product distributed to retail clients. Investors in Germany looking for leveraged exposure to crypto can find alternative routes through European crypto ETPs and ETNs, or derivatives at brokers.
