SEC Commissioner Advocates for Less Data Collection in Financial System
Outgoing Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Hester Peirce has spoken out against the trend of collecting more personal data in the financial system. In a recent speech, she argued that regulators should rethink their approach to monitoring the financial system and instead press for less personal data collection.
Peirce, known as 'Crypto Mom' for her friendly approach to regulating the space, pointed out that collecting more data doesn't necessarily lead to better crime detection. In fact, it can make it harder to find the needle in a larger haystack, and every stored data point raises the risk of leaks or misuse.
Pierce suggested using cryptographic tools like zero-knowledge proofs and attribute-based credentials, which can confirm facts without revealing underlying personal details. She also urged regulators to let firms rely on identity checks already performed by other regulated institutions rather than making every firm collect and store sensitive information.
