SEC Commissioner 'Crypto Mom' Hester Peirce Steps Down Next Week
Hester Peirce, a long-time ally of the US digital-asset industry and known as 'Crypto Mom', is stepping down as an SEC commissioner next week. Her term ends on October 2, according to her resignation letter posted on X on September 25.
Pierce's departure marks the end of her leadership in the SEC's crypto task force, which she led since the start of President Donald Trump's administration. Under her tenure, Pierce pushed back against an enforcement-driven approach and championed the 'Innovation Exemption', a framework that opened the door to security tokenization (ST). This measure created a five-year grace period for testing the issuance and trading of tokenized securities before a permanent system is established.
Pierce's departure will leave the SEC with only two commissioners, Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda. While a two-member quorum is still sufficient for voting on agenda items and continuing operations, a temporary slowdown in policy decisions appears inevitable due to the delayed nominations of Democratic commissioners by the Trump White House.
