SEC Commissioner Hester 'Crypto Mom' Peirce Steps Down October 2
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce is stepping down from her position on October 2, ending an approximately eight-year tenure. She was widely known as 'Crypto Mom' for her efforts to establish clearer rules-based regulation of digital assets. In a letter posted to her X account, Peirce expressed gratitude for the 'honor of my professional lifetime' serving as a commissioner.
Peirce's departure from the SEC follows a period of transition around her official term. Her stint as commissioner had already reached its scheduled end in June 2025, but the SEC allows members to continue serving for up to approximately 18 months after their term expires if not replaced before then. During this time, Peirce also took on a more direct operational role related to digital-asset policy.
As director of the SEC's Crypto Task Force since February 4, 2025, Peirce played a central role in shaping the agency's internal work on applying existing securities laws to digital assets and decentralized systems. Her approach has been consistent with the regulatory direction described by SEC leadership under Chairman Paul Atkins.
