SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce to Depart Post Amid Crypto Regulation Shift

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, known as 'Crypto Mom' for her advocacy of clear regulations on the crypto industry, has submitted her formal resignation from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), effective October 2. In a letter posted on her X account, she expressed gratitude to President Trump for the honor of serving as a commissioner and credited Chairmen Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda for their leadership.

Pierce served on the commission for approximately eight years, with her term officially expiring in June 2025. However, commissioners can continue to serve up to about 18 months after their terms expire if not replaced beforehand. As of February 4, 2025, Pierce was also serving as director of the agency's Crypto Task Force.

Pierce will be joining Regent University's law school in Virginia as an associate professor in November, where she will help bolster academic focus areas including federal litigation, securities regulation, and digital assets. The SEC has undergone significant changes under President Trump, shifting its approach to crypto regulation and enforcement since his inauguration in January 2025.
