SEC Exemption Opens Doors to Compliant Trading on Uniswap
Uniswap founder Hayden Adams believes that the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) recent decision to grant an exemption for tokenized securities platforms could benefit decentralized systems, specifically his own Uniswap. The SEC announced its decision on September 17, which allows certain tokenized US stocks to be traded on-chain in permissioned environments.
However, Adams focused on the assessment made by SEC member Hester Peirce, who noted that 'truly decentralized systems operated by autonomous software' do not expose underlying intermediary risks. According to Adams, this approach could be interpreted as meaning that normal, permissionless Uniswap use does not require an additional exemption.
Adams emphasized the significance of this development for licensed pools on Uniswap v4, which he believes could create a pathway for compliant trading in the US for assets and users subject to regulatory requirements. He also stated that the exemption could lead to the adoption of Automated Market Maker (AMM) technologies in traditional financial markets.
