SEC Greenlights 3x Leveraged Bitcoin and Ether ETPs in the US
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved the launch of six futures-based exchange-traded products (ETPs) that offer three times the daily performance of Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas. Volatility Shares, the issuer of these products, will now be able to list them on the Cboe BZX exchange, pending a separate registration. The products, which reset daily, will allow investors to gain exposure to the respective assets' price movements, but also come with the risk of sharp losses in volatile or sideways markets.
The approval marks a significant step in expanding regulated crypto access in the US, with many observers hailing it as a major breakthrough. Just three years ago, the SEC was still fighting spot Bitcoin ETFs in court. The development is seen as a notable shift in the regulator's stance on cryptocurrencies, which has been evolving in recent years.
The products will not begin trading immediately, as Volatility Shares must still register them with the SEC. However, the approval of these ETPs is seen as a significant milestone in the growth of the cryptocurrency market, and could pave the way for further listings and investments.
