The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has flagged tokenization as a high-risk area in its 2027 market examinations, marking a shift in regulatory focus. The SEC's latest priorities, released Friday, include tokenized securities among emerging trends it plans to scrutinize, alongside quantum computing and extended trading hours. This is the first time tokenization has been explicitly mentioned in the agency's examination priorities, indicating growing concerns over the security and reliability of critical market infrastructure.
The SEC's report highlights that examinations under Regulation SCI will focus on emerging trends, including tokenization of securities. The agency also listed tokenization among high-risk areas at clearing agencies, alongside default management, securities lending, and operational risks. Notably, cryptocurrencies remain absent as a standalone examination priority for the second consecutive year, after the SEC last included a dedicated section on crypto assets in its fiscal 2025 priorities.
The new priorities come as traditional financial institutions increasingly move into tokenized securities. Earlier this month, a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange filed to launch a platform offering tokenized shares in more than 60 US-listed companies. This development underscores the growing intersection between traditional finance and the tokenization of assets.
