SEC Leadership Gap Widens Amid Peirce Departure
With Commissioner Hester Peirce leaving the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Friday, the agency will be left with two commissioners. This marks only the second time in history that the SEC has operated with fewer than three members on its five-person commission.
Peirce's departure reduces the leadership overseeing major parts of the U.S. crypto market. SEC Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda will remain at the SEC, but their numbers are still down by one. The CFTC, which has been led by Chair Michael Selig as its sole commissioner since Caroline Pham left in December 2022, is also facing a leadership gap.
The Digital Asset Clarity Act, which aimed to give the CFTC a larger role in digital asset oversight, failed in the Senate earlier this month. This development comes at a time when both agencies are continuing to develop crypto policy through rulemaking and staff guidance.
