SEC Left with Skeleton Crew as 'Crypto Mom' Peirce Departs
Hester Peirce, affectionately known as 'Crypto Mom' by the digital asset industry, is leaving the SEC on October 2. Her departure reduces the agency's active roster to just two commissioners, Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, both Republicans.
The standard complement at the SEC is five commissioners, designed to ensure a diversity of perspectives and prevent any single faction from dominating policy. With only two members, operating with partisan harmony may eliminate tension, but it also means that a single recusal on any matter could prevent the commission from reaching a quorum.
The SEC's diminished bench comes at a critical time for digital assets, which comprise a $3 trillion market. Peirce had been leading the agency's Crypto Task Force since early 2025, seeking clearer rules and a more accommodating regulatory framework.
