SEC Prepares for 24-Hour Trading on US Stock Markets
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking steps to prepare for 24-hour trading on US stock markets. A roundtable meeting will be held at SEC headquarters on September 17, 2026, to discuss extending trading hours in the US.
The meeting aims to pave the way for traditional stock markets to trade for longer hours, similar to cryptocurrency markets. The technical and operational aspects of a model that would allow investors to buy and sell stocks at any time of day will be evaluated.
Major financial institutions have been invited to attend the meeting, including BlackRock, Citi, Nasdaq, NYSE, Cboe, FINRA, State Street, Citadel Securities, UBS, Robinhood, and Charles Schwab. The SEC aims to address issues related to night trading, market surveillance, liquidity, clearing and settlement processes, and investor protection.
