SEC Seeks to Fill Regulatory Void Left by Stalled Crypto Bill
The much-anticipated CLARITY Act, designed to provide clarity for crypto companies in the US on regulatory matters, failed to advance in the Senate. Despite this setback, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced it will move forward with its own regulatory framework.
The SEC's Innovation Exemption allows qualifying crypto companies to test new products and services without adhering to traditional financial market rules. This regulatory sandbox could have a significant impact on tokenization, as qualified trading venues may begin experimenting with tokenized versions of stocks trading on major US exchanges.
Coinbase and Robinhood are already building tokenization technology, while JPMorgan, Citigroup, BNY Mellon, and other traditional financial giants are developing their own platforms. The SEC's move could accelerate the adoption of blockchain-based infrastructure in the financial sector.
