SEC Sets Sights on Crypto Dominance with New Regulatory Agenda
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has outlined its 2026 Regulatory Agenda, emphasizing key priorities to revitalize public markets. SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins stated that making the United States the crypto capital of the world is a major goal.
To achieve this objective, the SEC plans to refine and enhance its regulatory framework for crypto assets, including rules related to their offer and sale. Exemptions and safe harbors may be introduced to provide market certainty, facilitate capital formation, accommodate innovation, and protect investors.
Additionally, the SEC is considering amendments to custody requirements under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and the Investment Company Act of 1940 to modernize custody rules for crypto assets. This will clarify compliance for investment advisers and companies handling crypto assets and streamline provisions no longer necessary for investor protection.
