SEC Tokenized-Stock Exemption Sets Stage for Coinbase, Robinhood Dominance
The Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) five-year innovation exemption is expected to benefit several companies in the crypto and fintech space. According to analysts, Coinbase, Robinhood, and Circle could be among the early winners of this new regulatory framework.
The SEC's exemption allows for tokenized U.S. stocks to trade on public blockchains through automated market makers (AMMs). To qualify, tokens must preserve shareholder rights such as dividends and voting privileges, while venues face limits on trading volume and the number of stocks they can offer.
Coinbase is seen as a potential beneficiary due to its existing tokenized-equity offering, which already meets some of the SEC's requirements. The company's CEO, Brian Armstrong, has also announced that voting rights are 'coming soon', a key feature in giving token holders the same rights as investors in the underlying shares.
Rothinhood is also expected to benefit from the new framework, despite its current offshore stock tokens not meeting the SEC's requirements. The company would need to develop additional products to offer compliant versions of U.S. stocks for trading on public blockchains.
