SEC Withdraws Crypto Enforcement Actions as Part of Strategic Regulatory Pivot
SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda revealed that the agency's decision to withdraw high-profile enforcement actions against major cryptocurrency firms last year was a strategic move to protect its institutional credibility ahead of a regulatory overhaul.
The withdrawals, which involved cases against Kraken, Ripple Labs, Coinbase, and other digital asset companies, were made during Uyeda's tenure as acting chair from January to April 2025.
Uyeda stated that continuing to litigate cases built on the prior administration's framework would have forced SEC lawyers to defend positions in court that the commission was simultaneously preparing to abandon.
This '180-degree change' in rulemaking and legal interpretations was necessary, Uyeda argued, as it ensured the agency's credibility by preventing its litigators from defending contradictory positions in court.
