Senate Advances Crypto Bill Despite Democratic Opposition

US Senate Majority Leader John Thune has moved to advance the Clarity Act, a landmark bill that would establish a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The move was made on Saturday, with Thune filing to set up a procedural vote on the bill when the Senate returns from its August recess in mid-September.

The bill needs at least eight Democrats and all voting Republicans to pass, which suggests that Senate Republican leaders are optimistic about securing the necessary votes. If passed, it would mark a significant victory for US President Donald Trump and the crypto industry.

The Clarity Act aims to provide clarity on when digital tokens are securities or commodities, as well as which regulators oversee them. Crypto companies have been pushing for this legislation, arguing that it is essential for their growth and adoption. In fact, they have spent over $119 million backing pro-crypto candidates in the 2024 election in an effort to advance the bill.

The passage of the Clarity Act would also grant Trump a second major crypto policy win, following his signing of a bill supporting dollar-backed tokens known as stablecoins into law last year. However, Democrats have expressed opposition to the bill due to concerns about Trump's family profiting from their own token holdings and potential conflicts of interest.

Trump reported over $1.4 billion in income from his family's crypto ventures last year, which has raised further questions about his involvement in the industry.
