Senate Blocks Clarity Act Amid Trump Family Crypto Controversy
U.S. President Donald Trump's family has been at the center of controversy surrounding the proposed Clarity Act, a market-structure bill aimed at defining the regulatory framework for the U.S. cryptocurrency market.
The Senate held a procedural vote on the 15th to advance the Clarity Act to floor debate but failed to reach the 60 votes needed, with a tally of 50 in favor and 49 against.
The biggest obstacle was a conflict-of-interest dispute involving over $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency income earned by the Trump family, according to financial industry sources.
Republicans sought a compromise until just before the vote, but Democrats complained that the standard for divesting substantial financial interests was too vague and unenforceable.
