Senate Blocks Clarity Act, Deals Blow to Crypto Industry

Crypto companies have suffered a major setback after the Senate blocked a bill aimed at creating clearer rules for digital assets. The Clarity Act, which had been debated for some time, was unable to reach the floor due to a lack of votes. Despite efforts to revise the legislation, it ultimately fell short by 10 votes.

The motion to proceed with the bill received support from 50 senators but failed to meet the required 60-vote threshold. Four Republican senators broke ranks with their party to vote against advancing the bill, which was seen as a major blow to the crypto industry.

Critics of the legislation argued that it did not go far enough in addressing concerns about public officials' profits from cryptocurrency investments. The issue had been a sticking point for Democrats, who felt that the revisions made to the bill still left too many loopholes.

The failure of the Clarity Act has sent shockwaves through the crypto market, with Bitcoin falling by around 3% and Coinbase shares dropping by 10%. Supporters of the bill now concede that it is effectively dead for the year, allowing regulators like the SEC and CFTC to continue shaping the rules on their own.
