Senate Blocks Clarity Act in Blow to Cryptocurrency Industry
The U.S. Senate voted 50 to 49 on Tuesday to block the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at establishing a clear regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
The measure, which had already passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support in July 2025, failed due to unanimous opposition from the Democratic caucus and some Republicans.
Democratic lawmakers cited alleged conflicts of interest stemming from President Donald Trump's digital asset ventures as a reason for their opposition. They also argued that proposed amendments to prohibit federal officials from issuing or sponsoring digital assets were insufficient.
Industry leaders expressed deep concern over the block, citing the risk of capital flight and the need for a permanent legal framework to prevent future regulatory shifts.
