Senate Blocks Clarity Act, Sparking Crypto Price Drop
The Clarity Act, a long-awaited legislation aimed at clarifying digital asset oversight, has been blocked by the Senate. The bill, which would have formally divided regulatory responsibility between regulators and distinguished between securities, commodities, or stablecoins, failed to advance due to lack of votes.
On Tuesday, senators voted 49-50 against advancing the legislation, missing the required 60 votes. The digital asset industry has been advocating for this bill, which President Donald Trump urged lawmakers to pass last month.
Bitcoin's price dropped sharply on the news, falling 4% in a 24-hour period and trading at $75,997. Democrats had been accused of deliberately stalling the bill by pro-crypto lawmakers, but both parties ultimately voted against it.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the bill, stating that 'this bill would put us all at risk of a crypto-fuelled economic crash' and that the U.S. still needs proper crypto legislation. She also pointed to President Trump's alleged conflicts of interest in the digital asset space, including his memecoin $TRUMP.
