Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Concerns Over Trump Conflicts
The Senate has stalled legislation aimed at creating a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, dealing a blow to an industry that had been pushing aggressively for a uniform set of rules. The bill, known as the Clarity Act, would have given crypto firms more legal certainty and protected consumers by establishing guardrails and regulatory requirements.
However, Senate Democrats blocked the legislation in a 49-50 vote, citing concerns over ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from their investments. While some Democrats support regulation, they argue that the bill does not go far enough to address conflicts of interest.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in cryptocurrency since taking office, including more than $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products. The president's family also has a controlling stake in the company, which was co-founded with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The industry had been hoping for a clear regulatory framework to guide their activities, but the bill's failure could lead to indefinite stalling. Republicans argue that the legislation aims to give the industry more legal certainty and protect consumers, while opponents claim it is a giveaway to the industry.
