Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Ethics Concerns
A Senate bill aimed at regulating cryptocurrency has stalled due to Democratic opposition over ethics concerns. The legislation, which has been in the works for over a year, was blocked by a 49-50 vote on Tuesday.
The bill's failure is seen as a blow to the $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market, which has pushed aggressively for uniform regulation. However, some Democrats have expressed concerns that the legislation does not go far enough in preventing President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from their investments in digital assets.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in the crypto sector since being reelected, including a controlling stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto firm co-founded with his special envoy Steve Witkoff. The president reported over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products last year.
The White House has indicated that it will now turn to agencies to implement parts of its crypto agenda, warning that the failed vote could lead to a loss of American leadership in digital assets and increased reliance on international standards.
