Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Ethics Concerns Over Trump Investments

Senate Democrats have blocked legislation aimed at creating a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, effectively stalling an industry-backed effort to establish uniform rules.

The 49-50 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to move forward with the bill, which has been touted as essential in providing legal certainty and protecting consumers by introducing guardrails and regulatory requirements.

A key sticking point for Democrats was their demand for stricter ethics safeguards, particularly given President Donald Trump's significant wealth in crypto investments. The legislation would have placed new limits on federal elected officials' ability to profit from digital assets like the presidential meme coins launched by Trump and his wife Melania before his second term.

Despite efforts by Republicans to address Democratic concerns through concessions, including additional powers for state attorneys general, no Democrats ultimately supported the bill. The White House has since indicated that it will pursue regulatory actions through agencies rather than Congress.
