Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Family Profits Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked legislation that would create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency on Tuesday. The bill, which had been supported by industry leaders, aimed to provide legal certainty and protect consumers by establishing a set of guardrails and regulatory requirements.
The vote was 49-50, falling short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns that it would allow President Donald Trump's family to continue profiting from cryptocurrency investments while in office.
Trump has reportedly amassed significant wealth in the crypto sector since his reelection, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of governance tokens in 2024. The president's family also holds a controlling stake in the company.
The White House indicated that it would now turn to agencies to implement parts of its crypto agenda, warning that the failed vote could continue to stifle financial innovation domestically while it flourishes abroad.
