Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
A bill to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency has stalled in the US Senate after Democrats blocked its passage due to concerns over President Donald Trump's investments in the sector. The legislation, known as the Clarity Act, aimed to give the industry more legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements.
The bill had been championed by Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, who said that a no vote would mean 'opposing real ethics reforms on politicians' personal investments, handing American leadership in digital assets to our foreign competitors, and leaving Americans with zero protections in the digital asset markets.'
However, Democrats were adamant that the bill include strong ethics safeguards to prevent the president and his family from enriching themselves while in office. President Trump has amassed significant wealth in cryptocurrency since taking office, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products.
