Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
A Senate bill to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency was blocked by Democrats due to concerns about President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
The legislation, known as the Clarity Act, aimed to give crypto firms legal certainty and protect consumers with guardrails and regulatory requirements. However, Democrats demanded stricter ethics safeguards to prevent the president and his family from enriching themselves while in office.
President Trump agreed to some concessions on ethics, including new restrictions on federal elected officials issuing digital assets like meme coins, but it was not enough for Democrats. They sent a counteroffer late Monday to expand the ethics provision, which was rejected.
The opposition appears to have solidified two months before the midterm elections, despite significant donations that crypto groups have given to some Democrats in recent years. The bill's failure could lead to a lack of regulation in the $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market, allowing foreign competitors like Brussels or Beijing to set standards instead of Washington and New York.
Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis, a lead sponsor of the bill, said that a no vote means opposing real ethics reforms on politicians' personal investments and leaving Americans with zero protections in digital asset markets.
