Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
A bill aimed at regulating the cryptocurrency industry has been blocked in the Senate by Democrats, who pushed back on President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
The legislation, known as the Clarity Act, had been sponsored by Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming and sought to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. However, Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns that it would allow Trump and his family to continue profiting from their investments in crypto while in office.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, argued that the bill should include strong ethics safeguards to prevent the president and his family from enriching themselves while in office.
Trump had agreed to some concessions on ethics, including new restrictions on federal elected officials from issuing digital assets like the presidential meme coins he and his wife Melania launched before he took office. However, these concessions were not enough for Democrats, who sent a counteroffer late Monday to expand the ethics provision but were unable to strike a final deal.
