Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, stalling an industry-backed effort to place guardrails around digital assets.
The bill aimed to provide legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of regulations and requirements, but was met with opposition from Democrats who demanded stronger ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump's family from profiting from their investments in the sector.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in crypto during his presidency, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of governance tokens. The bill would have also barred members of Congress and their families from profiting off stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency.
With the vote falling short by one vote, the industry will now look to agencies to implement parts of its crypto agenda, but the White House warned that this may lead to foreign competition dominating the market.
