Senate Blocks Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked legislation aimed at creating a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, halting an industry-backed effort to establish clear rules for digital assets. The 49-50 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to move forward with the bill.
The legislation, known as the Clarity Act, aimed to provide the $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market with more legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements. However, Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns that it did not go far enough in limiting President Donald Trump's investments in the industry.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in crypto during his presidency, including more than $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products, according to his annual disclosure report. The president and his family also have a controlling stake in the company.
Some Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, expressed concerns that the bill would allow Trump to continue profiting from his investments while working families struggle with higher prices and an economy that gets worse by the day.
