Senate Blocks Cryptocurrency Regulation Amid Trump Ethics Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, stalling an industry-backed effort to place guardrails around digital assets.
The bill, which aimed to give crypto firms legal certainty and protect consumers, was met with opposition from Democrats who demanded stronger ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump's family from profiting from their investments in the sector.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in cryptocurrency since his reelection, including a controlling stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto firm co-founded with his special envoy Steve Witkoff. The president reported over $500 million in revenue from the company's sales of governance tokens last year, and more than $1.4 billion from crypto businesses overall.
Despite Trump's concessions on ethics, including new restrictions on federal elected officials from issuing digital assets like his presidential meme coins, Democrats continued to push for stronger enforcement and divestment requirements.
