Senate CLARITY Act Failure Casts Shadow Over US Crypto Regulation
The Senate's failure to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the CLARITY Act, has left the US cryptocurrency landscape in a state of uncertainty. The bill aimed to establish a unified regulatory framework for digital assets, but it fell short of the necessary three-fifths majority with 49 votes in favor and 50 against.
The CLARITY Act was designed to clarify the roles of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in overseeing cryptocurrency. However, its failure has exacerbated compliance issues for cryptocurrency companies, leaving them without clear guidelines.
The SEC has attempted to alleviate some regulatory pressure by introducing an 'Innovation Exemption', but this move risks deepening the already unequal compliance framework, which favors larger industry players over smaller ones.
