Senate Crypto Bill Stalls Amid Trump-Era Ethics Disputes
The CLARITY Act, aimed at establishing clearer rules for digital commodities and dividing oversight responsibilities between regulatory bodies, has stalled in the Senate after a 49-50 procedural vote on September 15.
Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis attributed the setback to Democratic opposition, specifically citing President Donald Trump's crypto interests as a major obstacle. However, Democratic negotiators disputed this explanation, pointing instead to unresolved ethics provisions involving elected officials' crypto holdings.
The bill had already undergone numerous changes requested during bipartisan negotiations, with supporters arguing that it was essential for establishing a federal crypto market structure framework.
Senator Thom Tillis filed a motion to reconsider the vote shortly after, leaving open the possibility of reviving the legislation. Industry participants have warned that continued delays could leave crypto companies operating without comprehensive federal rules.
