Senate Crypto Clarity Act Stuck Amid Ethics Dispute
The Senate's Digital Asset Market Clarity Act is facing significant hurdles in meeting its August 7 deadline, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Despite this pessimistic outlook, Thune expressed a desire to 'at least get Clarity started' on the Senate floor before lawmakers depart for their summer break.
The central impediment to progress involves contentious ethics provisions. The proposed legislation contains language prohibiting all federal government officials from creating or endorsing digital currencies. Democratic lawmakers argue these restrictions are insufficient, with Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego calling the Republican-drafted ethics section a 'piece of shit' and saying it's 'not a serious effort.'
Republican senators strongly rejected this characterization, with Senator Bernie Moreno defending the provisions as 'the most powerful ethics language in US history.' Gallego indicated he plans to collaborate with Senator Thom Tillis on an alternative proposal.
