Senate Crypto Regulation Bill Stalls Amid Ethics Concerns
A Senate bill aimed at creating a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency has stalled after failing to pass a crucial vote, despite efforts from Republican sponsors to address ethics concerns.
The legislation, which has been in the works for over a year, aims to provide legal certainty and protect consumers by establishing guardrails and regulatory requirements for the industry. However, Democrats have blocked the bill, citing concerns that it would allow President Donald Trump and his family to continue profiting from their cryptocurrency investments.
Trump's family has reported significant revenue from crypto businesses, including over $500 million in sales of 'governance tokens' through World Liberty Financial, a company co-founded with Steve Witkoff. The president's annual disclosure report also showed that he earned more than $1.4 billion from crypto businesses last year.
While some Democrats have expressed support for the bill, they have insisted on stronger ethics provisions to prevent the president and his family from benefiting financially from their investments in the sector.
