Senate Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Blocked Over Trump Investments Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, delaying an industry-backed effort to establish uniform rules. The bill stalled on a 49-50 vote, falling short of the 60 votes required in the Senate.
The $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market has pushed aggressively for regulation, but Democrats insisted that any bill must include strong ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from crypto investments while in office.
Trump's family has raked in significant profits from the crypto sector since his reelection, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products. The president's annual disclosure report filed with the Office of Government Ethics revealed a controlling stake in the firm and reported more than $1.4 billion in revenue from crypto businesses last year.
Senate Republicans say the legislation aims to give the industry more legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements, including better enforcement to prevent bad actors and protections to prevent a market collapse.
