Senate Democrats Meet in Emergency Session Ahead of CLARITY Act Vote
Senate Democrats are set to meet tonight in an emergency meeting to discuss the CLARITY Act, a critical crypto market structure law that is up for vote on September 15. The bill has been passed by the House with bipartisan support and was also approved by the Senate Banking Committee in May.
However, there are still several unresolved issues, particularly regarding ethics rules in the new crypto market structure bill draft. Democrats seek more stringent regulations on senior government officials who have dealings with digital assets, including a provision that would prevent officials from issuing or promoting certain crypto tokens and limit their number of spouses.
The language has sparked controversy, especially since it does not apply to the children of officials, which raises questions about Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump's involvement in World Liberty Financial, a firm linked to the Trump family's crypto endeavors that has already been granted a bank charter for its USD1 stablecoin in August.
The meeting comes just two days before the Senate is set to hold its procedural vote on Tuesday, with Republicans controlling 53 seats and needing at least seven Democrats to support the bill for it to pass. Senator Cynthia Lummis warned that if the CLARITY Act fails to pass this Senate cloture vote, it could be delayed until 2030.
