Senate Democrats Scramble to Resolve Clarity Act Disagreements Ahead of Crucial Vote
Senate Democrats are holding an emergency meeting to discuss the Clarity Act ahead of a crucial procedural vote on Tuesday. The bill, which aims to structure the cryptocurrency market, has been months in the making but several major issues remain unresolved.
Among the key disagreements is stricter conflict-of-interest restrictions, which Democratic senators are pushing for. This issue has held up progress on the bill, despite bipartisan support from Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Mark Warner.
The Senate Banking Committee previously advanced the legislation in May with a 15-9 vote, but it will need 60 votes to move forward. Given that all voting Republicans are expected to back the measure, at least several Democratic senators would also have to support it.
Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz noted on Sunday that negotiations were continuing over the weekend. The outcome of Tuesday's procedural vote remains uncertain, but failure to advance the legislation could delay comprehensive cryptocurrency market structure legislation for years, as warned by Senator Cynthia Lummis.
