Senate Fails to Pass Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Ethics Concerns
The Senate voted on Tuesday to block legislation that would have created a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency. The bill, which was backed by the industry, aimed to provide 'clarity' and 'certainty' for crypto firms, but Democrats opposed it due to concerns over ethics safeguards.
President Donald Trump has amassed significant wealth in crypto during his time in office, including $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of governance tokens. His family also has a controlling stake in the company, which co-founded with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The legislation would have given the industry more legal certainty and protected consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements. However, Democrats said the bill still needed stricter enforcement and a requirement for Trump or any future president to divest if holdings reach a certain value.
