Senate Rejects Clarity Act Amid Ethics Concerns

The Senate's rejection of the Clarity Act has left cryptocurrency markets in limbo. The bill, which aimed to create a new regulatory framework for the $2.3 trillion market, failed to pass due to a dispute over ethics and enforcement.

Democrats opposed the bill because it did not go far enough to prevent federal officials from influencing cryptocurrency policy while retaining financial interests in the industry. President Trump's family has extensive crypto-related ventures, raising concerns about conflicts of interest.

The bill was revised before the vote to prohibit senior officials from creating or sponsoring certain digital assets and expand enforcement authority. However, Democrats continued to demand stronger divestment provisions, which were seen as a major sticking point in the negotiations.

Community banks expressed concern that rewards offered by stablecoin companies could pull deposits away from traditional institutions, leaving less money available for loans to farmers, families, and small businesses.
