Senate Rejects CLARITY Act Amid Ethics Concerns, But Bitcoin Thrives
The CLARITY Act failed to advance in the Senate due to disagreements over ethics and enforcement, not opposition from Democrats or Republicans.
A bipartisan majority of 49 senators voted against the bill, which aimed to create a framework for classifying and supervising digital assets. The decisive obstacle was ethics concerns surrounding President Donald Trump's financial interests in cryptocurrency ventures.
Trump championed the legislation, but Democrats argued that stronger restrictions were needed to prevent self-dealing by senior federal officials. Despite concessions made by Trump, including restrictions on senior officials issuing or sponsoring certain digital assets, Democrats demanded more stringent enforcement and divestment requirements.
The bill's failure may prove beneficial for Bitcoin operators and investors, as it ended a distracting political sideshow and prevented Washington from imposing a regulatory structure that could have created confusion rather than clarity.
